On this date 30 years ago, our Technical Director, Jason Fraser joined Norscot as an Architectural Technican. We found time for a quick, socially distanced chat to find out more about his Norscot journey so far!

Some favourite Norscot highlights?

I have had many highlights over the years most notably becoming a Company Director in 2000. We have been involved in several exciting projects including providing the timber frame structure for the Wick Golf Club, the accommodation block at the world-renowned The Three Chimneys restaurant in Skye and for a mixture of steel and timber frame office blocks in Stoneyfield, Inverness. One other project that really stands out for us was providing the timber frame for the accommodation units at John O’Groats for Natural Retreats. These buildings are very prominent in the area and really add to the character of the place.

I think the thing I have probably enjoyed the most at my time at Norscot is being part of the team that helps people build their own homes. This can seem quite a difficult task and being able to help our clients achieve the construction of their dream home has always been very satisfying.

Probably the most notable highlight for me was when the Company celebrated its 25th Anniversary. It was great to see the Company reach this milestone and the celebration arranged by the Company was fantastic; a great day and evening was enjoyed by all the staff and people involved with the business. I can’t believe that was 12 years ago.

Why did you join Norscot?

I joined Norscot because they were a modern professional company. From speaking to Peter and seeing the business you could tell it was a well-run family business at the forefront of the industry, always looking for ways to improve and expand both its staff and products while still holding onto traditional values.

Anything else, you’d like to add?  

Throughout my time at Norscot I have been involved in many aspects of the business apart from the actual hands-on manufacturing including helping to develop our groundbreaking projects like the Virtual Reality Showhomes and developing our range of future proof Wellbe homes. This has made my job very varied and interesting and made the last 30 years just fly by.

We can’t believe it has been 30 years already. Maybe it is true, time really does fly when you’re having fun and working hard!

We also own a purpose-built showroom, sales office and storage facility on the Carse Industrial Estate in Inverness.

We proudly supply products to domestic, retail and trade clients from the Shetland Islands, the Central Belt, Outer Hebrides and Aberdeenshire and everywhere in between!

Current Opportunities

Factory Maintenance Technician – Deadline 9th July

We are looking to recruit a skilled maintenance technician to be based at our factory in Bower.

Previous experience in welding and maintaining hydraulic and pneumatic machinery is a must as this will be your main responsibility. However, some in-house training will be provided. Candidates must be highly motivated, reliable and be able to work efficiently alongside others as well as on their own.

Full and Part Time Joiners (Inverness) – Deadline 16th July

We are currently seeking highly motivated, experienced Joiners to join our existing workforce in Inverness.

Applicants must be motivated, of smart appearance, reliable, possess good communication skills and be prepared to work in a team environment Monday to Friday with occasional weekend work. Full driving license and own tools are essential.

We’d like to introduce you to our new Contracts Administrator, Sharon Lawrence who has been with us for a few weeks now. We found time in her busy work schedule to have a quick (socially-distanced) chat about what attracted her to the role at Norscot as well gaining insight into life outside of the office.

What attracted you to the role at Norscot?

Norscot, being a local business with a history of great customer service, high standards and focus on quality, align with my values and wish to do my best for people. I enjoy being organised and building communication and relationships. The Contract Administrator role seems like the perfect opportunity for me.

A little bit about your previous experience in relation to your new role at Norscot.

Qualifying as a Dental Nurse in 2001 and going on to be Practice Manager while living in North Wales, I believe has provided me with the skill set required of a Contract Administrator. Dentistry, being driven by process and adherence to policy and procedure, should hopefully have provided the transferable skills I need to do well. Firstly, however, I need to call people customers or clients rather than patients!

Three words that best describe you.

Hard-working, loyal and caring.

Interest/Hobbies outside of the workplace. 

I have 3 cats, Alfie, Luna and Ziggy, who are often more entertaining than the tv! I enjoy music, going to gigs and musical theatre. I have an eclectic taste, 70s and early 80s, Rocky Horror and my guilty pleasure, Barry Manilow!

Last week, we said a fond farewell to our lovely Linda who was our fabulous Administration Assistant working at the heart of the company in our Bower Showroom. Before she left us, we had a quick (socially distanced) chat through our Perspex desk divider about her time working at Norscot.

How long have you worked for Norscot?

 I have worked here for 6 years and 11 months as an Administrative Assistant

A Norscot highlight?

I have made some friends for life through working at Norscot. Also, being able to watch the Company grow and manage to make its way through the Covid-19 pandemic successfully was fantastic.

 Why did you join Norscot?

As a previous employee, I knew a bit about the Company and so I felt comfortable coming back.

What will you miss the most about working at Norscot?

I will miss the workforce they are all a good bunch of people from the office to the workshops to the fitters as they were always willing to help you out if needed. The banter will also be missed!
